Roatan, Honduras is on just about every scuba divers bucket list. For some, it is the lure of the infamous Whale Sharks that can be spotted. For others, it is the easy diving and beautiful seas. Whatever your reason for wanting to dive in Roatan, it is justifiably a good one. Roatan does not disappoint.
Our first trip to Roatan was just post 9/11 – we were actually there for the 1 year anniversary of that horrific event. More on that later (the locals were amazing on that day). We booked a 14 day full dive package from one of the online dive sites, which were pretty new back in those days. Due to the limited travel many were doing because of the aftermath of 9/11, everything was on sale and we received buy one week, get one free!
While 14 days turned out to be a bit long for a dive trip, it afforded us an opportunity to relax and just enjoy the views, beach and ocean. However, we were there for diving and diving we did! The year before we had traveled to Cozumel, Mexico, so that would most likely be our comparison – or so we thought. The only similarities were that we dove and there was an ocean to be honest. The vibes are completely different.
Roatan is a very laid back island. Seriously. The term “island time” makes sense there. From the moment we arrived until we left, we felt like we were on island time. We booked an all-inclusive package, which allowed us to dive as much as we wanted, including night diving.
